If you are new to the world of yoga, it might seem like an intimidating world indeed. You see pictures and videos of people in Bikram yoga positions that you think you will never be able to even attempt, let alone master. But, there is no need to be nervous! There are basic Bikram yoga positions perfect for beginners at any fitness level. Yoga allows you to start easy and work toward the more difficult poses as your balance, flexibility and strength improve.
The Importance of the Warm-up
It’s extremely important that you warm-up before you start your yoga workout, because you’re going to be working your muscles and joints more than you may think. You can actually use Bikram yoga positions to warm-up, but which ones you choose will depend on the type of yoga you are going to do during your workout or the body parts you are going to focus on. You should finish your yoga session with a few finishing poses to help yourself relax and cool-down your muscles. Even more than some other types of exercise programs, a good warm-up and cool down time will help you to get the most out of your workout and prevent possible injury from occurring.
Starting Yoga
One of the first Bikram yoga positions that you will need to learn is the Savasana, or the death pose. This position is done flat on your back, and will go through the process of tightening and relaxing every muscle in your body. Don’t let your mind wander when you are in this yoga position, try to keep your mind focused on a single uplifting image. The Udhitta Padasana yoga position is a natural next step, because it just adds raised legs to the death pose. While lying flat on your back with your arms out to the side, you will raise one leg until it is at a right angle with the rest of your body. Once you’ve held that leg up for several seconds, you’re going to slowly lower it and raise the other leg in the same manner. You’ll complete the pose by then raising both legs together.
Beginners also like to do the Dog and Cat yoga position. This combination yoga position starts out with a cat like stretch. On your hands and knees, softly arch your back while raising your tailbone and pelvis up. Then, arch your back up as you push your tailbone toward the floor. If you smoothly flow back and forth between these two positions, you are going to give both your abs and your back a great workout. This beginning yoga position is a great one for increasing flexibility in your spine, but make sure that you are doing the position gently and that you are not overextending your back as you stretch.
Yoga is a good way to increase flexibility, relieve stress and build strength and muscle tone. With the right Bikram yoga positions, even a beginner can benefit from yoga workouts.
